Making a list, checking it twice

The other day Joe Hill tweeted a link to a list of his 50 favourite books, and today Kat Howard did the same thing. In order to get over my jealousy of the fact that she has read Neil Gaiman's new book The Ocean At The End Of The Lane and I haven't, I thought I'd put my own list together.

As with the other lists, I'm ordering this alphabetically by author and making the distinction that my favourite books does not necessarily mean I think these are the best books ever written. I'm also allowing plays, non-fiction and poetry collections, as this is favourite books and not favourite novels. The other thing I'm doing is disqualifying a series from only taking up one space on the list, because that always annoys me. If there are seven books in a series and I want to include them all, then that's seven slots on the list. I think that's fair.

So, with no further ado:

David Almond The Savage
Charles Ashton Jet Smoke and Dragon Fire
Margaret Atwood The Handmaid's Tale
